Yes, It Is Wednesday Yet! + Read in April 2011

If you're wondering why this blog is being updated so sporadically lately, there are many perfectly valid explanations. I'm getting ready for a show (tomorrow night, details here) and that's been eating up a lot of my time. Meanwhile, I've also been going through a bit of an existential crisis, where I'm putting everything into question and wondering whether there's any point to me writing anything at all, let alone a blog about comic books. This happens to me fairly frequently and, hopefully, this too shall pass. (Although the recent blow of Canadians electing a majority Conservative government doesn't help.)

Anyway, some comic books are coming out today, and I will be buying a few of them. Namely:

  • Axe Cop: Bad Guy Earth #3 (of 3) (Dark Horse) - although I haven't even read issue #2 yet
  • Superboy #7 (DC) - although last issue sucked, but that was because of the Doomsday crossover
  • Sweet Tooth #21 (Vertigo) - which will be amazing, because it's Sweet Tooth
  • Astonishing Thor #4 (of 5) (Marvel) - I almost forgot this wasn't over
That's a remarkably small pull list for me this week. I'm proud of myself. However, I may also be tempted to try Fear Itself #2, Megaman #1 or iZombie #13. Or maybe I'll forget about all those and pick up a the hardcover of Greg Rucka's Stumptown that came out a few weeks ago.

---

In other news, here's a list of all the comics I read in April:
  • 5 Ronin #4-5
  • Thor #621
  • Fear Itself #1
  • Nonplayer #1
  • Sweet Tooth #20
  • Superboy #6
  • Flash #10-11
  • Journey into Mystery #622
  • Hellboy: Buster Oakley Gets His Wish
  • Birds of Prey #11
  • Batgirl #20
  • Amazing Spider-Man #658-659
  • Avengers: Children's Crusade #5
  • Wolverine and Jubilee #4
  • Super Dinosaur #1
  • Supergirl #63
  • Teen Titans #94
  • Butcher Baker #2
  • Infinite Vacation #2
  • Madman Special
  • Dark Horse Presents #1 (most of it, anyway)
  • Detective Comics #876
  • Action Comics #900
  • Xombi #2
  • Silver Surfer #3
  • Sigil #2
  • American Vampire #14
  • Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #2
I'm not going to pick my usual top 5 and stinker of the month, but I will say that Super Dinosaur was way better than I expected it to be and Dark Horse Presents was probably the biggest disappointment. If I thought any of this was in any way important, I might even bother to write reviews for both. But I probably won't.

1. Detective Comics #875 (One of the best comics I've read in a while.)
2. Xombi #1 (Super-stoked about this new series.)
3. Jimmy Olsen (So much fun! The only disappointment is that Nick Spencer is now Marvel exclusive, so there's no chance of him returning to this character.)
4. Amazing Spider-Man (Catching up on "Big Time" was a lot of fun, and the issues with art by Marcos Martin were simply breathtaking.)

5. Wolverine and Jubilee #3 (Cool story. Beautiful art.)

Stinker of the month: Red Robin #21. I've had enough of this book. Dropped.

2. Starman Omnibus vol. 1 - Yeah, these comics are over 15 years old, but I'm just getting around to reading them now. I really enjoyed the first volume and I'm looking forward to the rest of it.

3. Sweet Tooth #18 - Always great.

4. Wolverine and Jubilee #2 - I just can't get over how pretty that art is.

Top 5 of the month*

1. X'ed Out - Finally got around to reading Charles Burns' latest. A brilliant and multi-layered work.

2. Wilson - Another book I should have read months ago. There was a lot of hype around Daniel Clowes' book last year and I wasn't sure it would work for me, but I was glad to find out the hype was well deserved. Funny and surprisingly moving.

3. Sweet Tooth #17 - This book is always a hit.

4. Batgirl #17 - It took me a long time to be convinced that this book was worth reading, but this issue really did it for me. Instantly added to my pull list.

5. Wolverine and Jubilee #1 - Excellent first issue for this promising new mini-series written by Kathryn Immonen and beautifully illustrated by Phil Noto.

(*Not necessarily the best, but very good and most noteworthy for a number of reasons.)

Stinker of the month: Infestation #1.

    Secret Avengers #7
    The Traveler #1
    Astonishing Thor #1

TOP 5 BOOKS OF THE MONTH

    1. Sweet Tooth #15 -  It might seem like an obvious pick, since this is generally my favourite book, but this issue was particularly rewarding. Perfectly structured, with a brilliant last page. Mind blown.

    2. Detective Comics #871 - The surprise hit of the month for me. With two Grant Morrison Batman runs coming to an end (B&R and Return of BW), a big one-shot introducing the new status quo (Batman: The Return) and the launch of a new series (Batman Inc), I was really surprised that the new team on Detective Comics, Scott Snyder and Jock, delivered the best Bat-book I've read in months. As much as I love Grant Morrison and have been enjoying his shenanigans, this felt like a breath of fresh air in the form of a return to basics, with solid storytelling and amazing art. An instant win. This is my new favourite bat book.

    3. Superboy #1 - The much-awaited debut of the new Superboy book didn't disappoint.

    4. Batman and Robin #16 - Of all the Grant Morrison bat books this month, the final issue of his run on Batman and Robins was my favourite - even if it was itself very flawed due to the massive delays resulting in three artists with wildly different styles sharing art duties on a title that was supposed to be fully drawn by Cameron Stewart. Still, this was a satisfying end to the saga of Dr. Hurt.

    5. Hellblazer: City of Demons #3 and 4 - I'm loving the hell out of this mini-series, written by Si Spencer and drawn by Sean Murphy. Only one issue left and I'm really looking forward to it.

NOTABLE OMISSIONS FROM THE TOP 5
(aka disappointing books, to varying degrees)

    1. Batman, Inc #1 - Yeah, I liked it. But it didn't rock my world. I'm waiting to see where it's headed.

    2. Batwoman #0 - Amazing, beautiful art. And if that was the only criteria, this book might have ended up in the top spot this month. But the story was not very substantial and the decision to have it told entirely from Bruce Wayne's perspective, with Kate Kane not even being given a voice, was disappointing. The ladies at 3 Chicks Reviewing Comics did a great job deconstructing the issue.

    3. Red Robin #17 - Wow, this book really took a plunge into mediocrity this month. It was among my favourites for a while, but that scene with Lynx turned me off completely. (And led into a stupid Tumblr argument that lost me a few followers - oh well.) Marcus To's art remains nearly flawless, though, and the full page spread of Bruce and Tim hugging was one of my favourite pages of the year! This book is now on probation. I'm giving it one more issue to convince me that it's still worth following.

    4. Teen Titans #89 - Last issue marked the start of a new run by writer J.T. Krul and artist Nicola Scott, and after reading it I was cautiously optimistic. It didn't take very long for it to go south, though. This issue featured Damian Wayne written completely out of character to such an extent that I decided to immediately drop the book from my pull list. It's a real shame, though, because Nicola Scott's art sure it pretty.

    5. Batman: The Return - This stank. I've realized that I'm not a fan of David Finch's art at all. And this was by far the weakest Morrison bat book of the month.

    Read in October 2010

These were my favourite new comics:

    1. Strange Tales II #1 (Marvel) I didn't like every story in this anthology, but the ones that were good were so amazing that this easily takes the top spot. Special mentions go to Rafael Grampa's twisted Wolverine tale and Kate Beaton's hilarious story featuring Spider-Man vs. Kraven.

    2. Action Comics #893-894 (DC) Paul Cornell's Lex Luthor story continues to defy expectations with a crazy "anything goes" approach to storytelling. From a ridiculously over-the-top issue featuring Gorilla Grodd with a giant spoon to a quietly metaphysical one consisting almost entirely of a conversation between Lex and Death, every new issue is a joy to read.

    3. Batman and Robin #15 (DC) The delays have been excruciating, but the final issue in Grant Morrison and Frazer Irving's story delivered all the thrills I expected from it. This three-issue arc might be my pick for best interior art of the year.

    4. Knight and Squire #1 (DC) More Paul Cornell craziness. This new series is off to a good start, and I'm excited to read the rest of it.

    5. Sweet Tooth #14 (Vertigo) Jeff Lemire's book is the very definition of consistent quality. It never falters or misses a step. Just great storytelling, characters and art each month. If you're not reading this, what the hell is wrong with you?

And my least favourite comic of the month:

Avengers Academy #5 (Marvel) Oh, God, this sucked. See here for some evidence.

Here's the list of all the comics I read last month:

    One Month to Live #5
    Action Comics #893-894
    The Incredible Hercules #126
    Avengers #500-503 ("Disassembled")
Hercules vs. Spider-Man: Assault on New Olympus
    The Incredible Hercules #139
    Neonomicon #2
    Avengers Academy #5
    Sweet Tooth #14
Fantastic Four in Attaque del MODOK
    Orc Stain #4-5
    Captain America: Winter Soldier (TPB)
Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne #5
    Edge of Doom #1
    Superior #1
John Constantine: Hellblazer: City of Demons #1-2

Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom #3

    Read in September 2010

Here's the list of everything I read last month:

    Avengers: Children’s Crusade #1-2
    5 Days to Die #1
    One Month to Live #1-4
    Sweet Tooth #13
    Brightest Day #0-9
    Walking Dead #1-30
    Batman #703
    Batman and Robin #14
    Daytripper #10
    Invaders Now! #1
    Red Robin #16
Animal Man #27-29 (Peter Milligan run)
    Birds of Prey #5
    Morning Glories #2
    X-Force #116
    Justice League: Generation Lost #1
    Thor #615
    Legion of Super-Heroes #5
    Flash #5
    Thunderbolts #147
    Avengers Academy #4
    Secret Avengers #5
    Casanova #1-2
    Godland #1
    Bulletproof Coffin #4

In no particular order, these were my favourite:

    1. Sweet Tooth #13 (Vertigo) Jeff Lemire writes and draws this series, and every issue is a miniature masterpiece. A new arc begins with issue #13, setting into motion a series of events that are likely to lead to some pretty crazy action in the coming months. Sweet Tooth just keeps getting better and better.

    2. Daytripper #10 (Vertigo) Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba’s mini-series about the life and death(s) of a Brazilian writer concludes with a quiet issue that almost seems like an understatement, but ties everything together beautifully. This was a wonderful series and I’m sad to see it come to an end. It will surely get collected in trade paperback in the near future, so keep an eye out for it.

    3. Thor #615 (Marvel) A new creative team starts a new story with this issue, and things are off to a great start. Matt Fraction sets things up for what is sure to be an epic cosmic adventure, perfectly suited to Pasqual Ferry’s otherworldly artwork. This is definitely a title that should be on your pull list right now.

    4. Bulletproof Coffin #4 (Image) Thing are definitely starting to fall into place in this totally weird mini-series written by David Hine and drawn by Shaky Kane. Hine and Kan have cast themselves as the mysterious creators of lost Golden Age comics, and metatextual shenanigans abound as our hero slips in and out of the reality of the comic books he’s reading. The story is clever and the eye-popping art and vibrant colours give this book a unique look. Two more issues to go.

    5. Action Comics #893 (DC) And last, but certainly not least, the issue that feature Gorilla Grodd coming after Lex Luthor with a giant spoon! Writer Paul Cornell doesn’t hold back, allowing his story to get as gloriously bizarre and entertaining as all super-hero comic books should be.

And my least favourite comic of the month:

Invaders Now #1 (Marvel) This mini-series started off on the wrong foot, with bad dialogue from Christos Gage, way too much setting up and not enough moving the plot forward. The art was also underwhelming, and despite a mildly interesting premise (orchestrated by Alex Ross), I wasn’t interested enough to buy the next issue. This one was a big fail for me.

    Read in July 2010

I'm a terrible blogger. I'd like to apologize profusely to all my imaginary readers for not updating this blog as often as I should. I just get so distracted by life.

It may interest you to know that I've been spending a lot of time on Tumblr, which is a fun little blogging platform that I find particularly useful for quickly sharing links, images and random comments about stuff I encounter on the internet. I have no intention of abandoning this blog, but I decided to create a "companion tumblr" to it. The idea is to use it to gather "followers" and then lure them to these pages where they will be amazed by the substantial and very insightful longer texts I've written. The only problem is that I haven't written those longer texts, so I'm afraid so far that experiment is a bust. Nevertheless, you can check it out here. There's a lot of pretty pictures and occasional drama discussion.

Here is the list of comics I read in July:

    Northlanders #29
    Wonder Woman #600
    Superman/Batman Annual #4
    Robin III #1-6
    Batman and Robin #13
    Sweet Tooth #11
    Brightest Day: The Atom Special
    Red Robin #14
Ball Peen Hammer (Adam Rapp and George O'Connor, First Second)
    The Authority: Relentless (TPB)
    Orc Stain #1-3
Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom #2
    Birds of Prey #3

    The Spirit #3
    JLA: Paradise Lost #1-3
    The Flash #3
    Action Comics #890
    Secret Avengers #2

My favourite single issue: Action Comics #890 (review coming up).

Other highlights: Sweet Tooth is still a favourite. Secret Avengers is off to a good start. And the new Tom Strong mini-series looks promising too, with absolutely gorgeous art by Chris Sprouse.

Least favourite single issue: The Spirit #3. (Reviewed here.)

TPB department: I wasn't as thrilled with Air vol. 1 (Vertigo) and A God Somewhere (Wildstorm) as I expected to be, although both are probably worth checking out. The manga series Pluto continues to blow my mind. And Mesmo Delivery (Dark Horse) was a blast, too.

Stuff I missed out on/didn't read yet: I wish I had picked up Bulletproof Coffin #1, but my LCS sold out pretty quickly. I bought Superman/Batman annual #4 and Wonder Woman #600 yesterday, but haven't read them yet.

    A few quick comments

Pluto is amazing! I bought volumes 3 and 4 (there are 8 in total) and I'm really looking forward to reading them. I'm going to wait until I finish the full series before posting a review.

I also really enjoyed the three Vertigo titles I checked out last month, all of which I would like to continue following. I'm adding Daytripper and Sweet Tooth to my pull list, and I guess I'm going to wait for trades on The Unwrtitten.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Cameron Stewart's Eisner-nominated webcomic, Sin Titulo. I don't have much interest in webcomics in general, probably simply because I haven't seen a lot of quality ones, but this one is a must-read. Two or three pages into it I was hooked, and I read the whole thing in one sitting.

The next chapter in Grant Morrison's epic Batman run, The Black Glove, almost made it on the list, but I still have a few pages to read. It's blowing my mind!
